"Up to the Crows Nest"

Today I had the opportunity to catch the end of the tall ship festival with my mom (my dad sat out because it cost money to go look at the ships, and I was reluctant to even go in the first place because I didn't like the idea of paying to get to look around and shoot pictures). We got to check out some interesting ships that were sailing through on their way to Chicago (don't ask me how Green Bay is on the way to Chicago). I took a lot of great photographs, with a lot of beautiful photos of the sky and the tall masts of the ships. Heres my pick for today, though I can't remember what ship this was on.

"Love Birds"

This photo from Vilas Beach appears exactly as shot. No processing for tone or anything, just a pure photo from RAW turned into a high quality jpeg. Not much to say today. I'm packing for the first of two moves in the coming week or so, so I'll just leave you with this image.

"Flowers and the Fountains"

Today I decided to use some free time I had while it was still early in the day, so I wasn't scrambling like I sometimes am. I wandered down Randall St. leaving behind my tripod and just shooting whatever looked interesting. I had the idea in the back of my mind to take some "abstract" photos, for a photo contest that the website Gizmodo runs weekly, which this week focused on the abstract. However, I quickly lost interest in that and fell back to the usual for me, landscapes, this time, of the urban variety. The more interesting fountain by Engineering Hall wasn't working but the flowers, colors of the buildings, and the glass of Engineering Hall combined with the "less interesting" of the two fountains made for the most interesting of the many great shots I got today.

Bonus Shots: Door County Photos 8/3

Today, a day after spending the day in Door County, I decided to post some more photos that I took that didn't make the cut for the photo of the day. I hope you enjoy.

"Little Painted Lady"

I thought the flower reference as appropriate with the flowers painted on this little girl's face. I didn't catch her name (or her brother's, as he made sure to have a photo taken of himself as well), but I gave their family my email address so hopefully they will comment below so I can add that in later. This little girl's name is Mia, and she's 3 years old. Her brother, who I photographed and posted a photo of in another set, is named Jackson, and he's 5 years old. Today I set out to take portrait and lifestyle photos around the Green Bay Farmers Market on Broadway. Lately I've been taking so many landscape photos that I haven't really gotten far enough out of my comfort zone. Its hard going up to a little girl, and her parents, as cute as she may be and as nice as they may seem, and going out of your comfort zone to ask to snap a few pictures. She handled the attention really well though, and listened to directions even better. Hopefully the family is out there reading, and if so, thank you for this photo and for your time.


I'm fascinated by eyes, so this photo was one I was happy to get. Particularly the beautiful color of the eyes, and the fact that you can see my reflection in her eyes. Some day I'm planning on setting out to get a photo of just an eye without the face, and no reflection, but this turned out for what I was shooting for today.

"The Ahnapee Meets Lake Michigan"

Regarding this photo, I would just like to say, this is exactly how the photo came out with a polarizer filter. This fantastic photo shows how the oxidized water from the Ahnapee River (with its decomposed materials and tanning, giving it the brown color) spills out and mixes with the blue-green water of Lake Michigan. No photoshop magic, just a polarizer filter which cancels out the reflection of the water, giving you its pure colors.

"The Churches over Ephraim"

I had a great day again with the family. I got to spend time with our artist friend Charles Peterson and his wife Sue and look out over their beautiful view of Ephraim. We also visited other artist friends of our family, David and Jean Aurelius, from Clay Bay Pottery. Along the way, good food was had and good pictures taken as well. This is my favorite out of the group, a picture of the quaint downtown Ephraim, WI as taken from the public beach. Its quite beautiful, which just goes to show why Door County is often called the Cape Cod of the Midwest.

"Abandoned"

Today was a great day, all around. I got to spend time with my family in Algoma, eat some great food, talk and have fun. I also got to drive around Algoma with my uncle and take some photographs of different scenes around Algoma, from the waterfront to an old cemetary with tombstones over 120 years old.

Today's one pick is an HDR image of a burned and abandoned house in an overgrown field in Algoma. I took 5 images that came out as great HDRs, which I might end up posting later, as well as some other shots from the day, however, I think this in itself is a fantastic shot, though it had to be cropped because of the effect of wind on the trees around the house. Others had issues with focus or weren't as eye-catching. I'll keep working on my focusing and when a tripod is a possibility, then I'll make sure to lower my f stop from now on. This photo had to be cropped slightly 1/250, f4/5.6/6.5, ISO 100, 18mm with a polarizer.

"Water Scene 1"

Today I went out and used the polarizer again. I'm definitely going to end up leaving this on for most outdoor shots. Not much to say about this shot, and in fact I like it a lot, except I messed up on the focusing (its hard to focus when your lens doesn't tell you where infinity is at...), so the boat house is a bit out of focus.

"Skies of Brightest Blue (HDR)"

Today was my first experience using a circular polarizer filter on my camera. Because of the poor weather yesterday the sun wasn't clear enough to try out my new filter. Today I went out and drove around, all the way out to Fitchburg and back to Lake Wingra taking photographs of landscapes and using the polarizer. Though the angle here isn't perfect (polarizers are best used at a 90 degree angle to the sun for full effect) and because of that you can see a small amount of fading in the sky from dark blue to light, I'm overall happy with my purchase of this filter. It gives a darker blue and more contrast in the sky, which motivates me to take more photos outdoors in the sun. I'm also happy with how this HDR turned out. I can't wait to take more sunny-day photos.
